What is Family Therapy?

Like individual, group, and couples therapy, family therapy plays its own key role in mental health. Family therapy focuses on the family unit rather than one individual. In family therapy sessions at WCT Behavioral Health, family members meet with a licensed professional together. This could include immediate, extended, or chosen family members. People may decide to attend family therapy in CT for many different reasons.

Who is Family Therapy in CT For?

Family therapy is for any family who wants to see a therapist together. You may choose to work with a family therapist in Connecticut for purposes such as:

  • Improving communication among family members
  • Helping family members understand each other better
  • Adjusting to life changes and transitions, such as moving to a new city, aging, or divorce
  • Substance use disorders and mental health conditions (e.g, mood disorders, schizophrenia) affecting family members of any age, including adults
  • Navigating chronic physical health conditions affecting a family member
  • Childhood behavioral conditions
  • Coping with death or grief
  • Resolving conflict

During your first family therapy session, your new therapist will ask your family about what brings you to treatment. You will also have an opportunity to ask the therapist questions if you have any. They’ll tell you a little bit about what to expect in upcoming sessions.

How Therapy Can Help You

Therapy can be beneficial in a wide variety of ways.  How much you can benefit from therapy depends on many factors, including how well you make use of the process and implement what you learn. Therapy can be hard work; we at WCT Behavioral Health & Medication Management have the utmost respect for the courage and willingness of those people we serve.

Highly Trained Staff

Our clinicians are highly trained professionals who have spent many years learning how to best help with new ways of coping with issues including depression, anxiety, sexuality concerns, trauma, grief, relationships and intimacy difficulties, substance use issues, ADHD, among others.

Powerful Ally

Your therapist can be a great ally in your personal growth journey, interpersonal relationships, family matters, marriage problems, and every day situations. As experts in human behavior, WCT has unique training backgrounds that allow for important changes in your patient's lives.

New Perspectives

We can also offer an outside, non-judgmental perspective on a problem that you might be having difficulty resolving or help guide you to a new viewpoint or solution that you may have never considered or imagined possible.

Finding the Right Family Therapist for You

Finding the right fit is especially crucial in family therapy for a reason. You want to find a therapist that all attending members of the family unit feel they can trust. Our approach is highly individualized. We have an eclectic team of providers with diverse areas of specialty. This includes different types of family therapy methods and techniques, as well as specific populations and concerns that may be relevant to your family. Finding a practice that offers what you need is the key to finding the right family therapist for you.

For example, you might want to find a family therapist who offers LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy or culturally sensitive therapy. Alternatively, you may want to work with a family therapist who is trauma-informed or versed in a specific concern, like grief, bipolar disorder, or substance abuse. It depends on your family’s unique needs.

Not sure which treatment is right for you?

What Happens During a Family Therapy Session?

Your initial family therapy session will focus on history taking. Your therapist will get to know your family, and you will get to know them. Family members are welcome to ask any questions they have. You will talk with your family therapist about what brings you to therapy and work to set goals. In the therapy sessions that follow, your therapist will use guided discussions and other techniques that help you meet those goals. Some of what happens (e.g., role-playing, topics of discussion) will depend on why you’re there. Your therapist at WCT Behavioral Health will create a safe, neutral environment where every family member has a chance to speak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is family therapy effective?

Yes! Family therapy is a proven and effective treatment. In some cases, it can even be more effective than individual therapy.

How long does family therapy last?

It depends. For most people, family therapy takes about 12-20 sessions total. However, you can stay in family therapy for as long as you need to. The number of sessions required depends on factors like why you are there and your collective goals.

Does insurance cover family therapy?

Family therapy is often covered by insurance, especially if the insurance company deems it necessary based on billing codes. WCT Behavioral Health accepts most forms of insurance, including most commercial healthcare plans, Medicaid (Husky Health), and Medicare. Contact us to verify your insurance coverage for family therapy.

Who can participate in family therapy?

Any person who plays an important role in your support system or who lives in your household can participate in family therapy. Immediate family members, extended family members, and chosen family are all examples of possible participants.

How do I get the most out of family therapy?

To get the most out of family therapy, approach it as a safe place to understand (rather than blame) each other, and stay committed to the process. Come in with an open mind. Work on respecting each other while being honest about how you feel. Remember that the therapist is a neutral third party. They’re not there to judge or pick favorites. Practice therapy skills (e.g., “I” statements, active listening) both in and, perhaps most critically, outside of sessions. Active participation from all family members is ideal and important. If you encounter any challenges, tell the therapist. They’re there to help.
