How Does Couples Therapy in Connecticut Help?

People come to us for couples therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes, people in relationships have persistent problems they need help healing their relationship from, like frequent arguments. Other times, it’s something more general, like “we’re having our first child and want to get ready” or “we’re looking for premarital counseling.” Couples therapy in Connecticut at WCT Behavioral Health helps people in relationships with concerns including but not limited to:

  • Conflict resolution.
  • Improved intimacy.
  • Better communication.
  • Premarital counseling.
  • Adding the “spark” back to your relationship.
  • Navigating hardships together as a team.
  • Parenting issues (e.g., disagreements, conflicting parenting styles).
  • Broken trust.
  • Family problems.
  • Life transitions.

During the first couple of sessions, a couples therapist will talk with you and your partner to discuss what brings you to therapy. You’ll get a chance to know your therapist, and they will get to know you. The therapist may tell you a little bit about how they practice and what to expect during sessions. They may ask questions about things like your relationship history (e.g., how you met, past and current challenges and events). From there, you will set goals together. These goals will guide your following therapy sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is couples therapy for?

Healthy couples, couples experiencing challenges (e.g., unresolved arguments, breaches of trust, family issues, homophobia or transphobia, racism), and couples facing major life changes (e.g., becoming parents, navigating serious illness) can all benefit from couples therapy.

In a couples therapy session, you and your partner will meet with a therapist together. A lot of what happens in a session depends on why you’re there and what your goals are. For example, you might reflect on how the past week went, or a specific event and how it went (e.g., an instance where you navigated conflict together, family visits). Or, you might roleplay with your partner (act out a scenario to practice things like healthy communication skills) or practice expressing your emotions in a session. Couples therapists can also provide education and may discuss certain concepts or topics with you. It is because sessions can vary so widely that couples therapists often start with explaining what to expect during sessions with them.

Most of the time, people can expect to attend couples therapy once per week.

Couples in therapy review the goals they set and discuss progress regularly throughout the process. At this time, they can discuss what’s worked for them so far and, if applicable, what they’re still struggling with so that their therapist can help them make a plan to address those challenges in upcoming sessions. This is just one way to tell that couples therapy is working. The couples we work with often report noticing better communication outside of sessions, which is a great way to acknowledge your own progress.

To get the most out of couples therapy:

  • Be honest with your therapist.
  • Practice the skills you learn in therapy outside of sessions.
  • Be open to change.

Therapy requires your participation and collaboration. Speak up. Ask your therapist questions if you have them. Tell them about the challenges you need help with.

How many couples therapy sessions you need depends on several factors. For example, what brings you and your partner to therapy. A couple who comes to premarital counseling, for example, could need fewer sessions than a couple who comes to therapy for long-term resentment or severe erosion of trust.

Problematic communication and a lack of emotional affection are some of the most common reasons people seek couples therapy.

WCT Behavioral Health and Wellness is open from 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and by appointment on weekends. We will do everything we can to accommodate your and your partner’s schedule and find a time for couples therapy that works for you.
