Depression Treatment in CT at WCT Behavioral Health and Wellness

Depending on who you are, the best approach to depression treatment may involve therapy, medication, or a combination of both. We’re here to meet you where you’re at and help you find what works for you.

Depression Therapy in CT

Our approach is not one-size-fits-all. We have a strong team of providers from different walks of life; it’s important to us that the people who come to us for therapy can find the therapist, psychologist, counselor, or social worker they “click” with. Therapies and types of services offered by the therapists at WCT Behavioral Health include, but are not limited to:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Animal-Assisted Therapy
  • Strength-Based Therapy
  • Culturally Sensitive Therapy
  • LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy
  • MBFCT (Mindfulness-Based Therapy)
  • Life Coaching
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing

CBT is one of the most evidence-based therapies for depression. For this reason, it’s not uncommon to start with this treatment. When used for depression, CBT often focuses on helping people reframe negative thoughts, implement healthy behaviors, and establish coping skills. Mindfulness-Based CBT combines typical CBT strategies with mindfulness to target chronic depression and is a common approach our providers might use to treat symptoms. We offer individual and group therapy, both of which can be helpful for people with depression.

Everyone has different needs. Providers should work with clients to personalize depression treatment so that it accommodates those needs and helps people get the best results. For example, a person who has depression and underlying trauma may benefit from trauma therapy alongside other treatments. Strength-based methods can help people with depression find inner confidence and create more positive beliefs about themselves. It is not uncommon for people to benefit from multiple types of therapy.

Medication Management

The most common types of medication used to treat depression belong to drug classes called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs). Sometimes, people benefit most from other types of medication. For example, Wellbutrin, a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), or older antidepressants, such as tricyclic antidepressants. The Medication Management team at WCT Behavioral Health and Wellness works with clients closely to help them find the right fit.

Our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners do more than just prescribe medication. They also offer assessments and evaluations (both for medication management and diagnosis) and are here to help you find depression treatment that works for you as a whole person. For example, lifestyle factors and alternative treatments for treatment-resistant depression.

Understanding Depression – Common Types and Symptoms

There are different types of depression. We provide depression treatment in Connecticut for people affected by concerns such as:

Major Depressive Disorder

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is diagnosed when a person has five or more of the following depression symptoms. These must last for at least two weeks and affect functioning or cause clinically significant distress.

  • Persistent sad or empty mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in significant activities
  • A disproportionate or excessive sense of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt
  • Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts.
  • Fatigue, low energy, or decreased efficiency in completing tasks
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Restlessness or slowed body movements
  • Changes in appetite or weight

At least one symptom must be either a persistent sad or empty mood or loss of interest or pleasure in significant activities. To be diagnosed, your symptoms must not be better attributed to another condition (e.g., bipolar disorder) or a substance (e.g., drugs, alcohol) alone.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is a form of major depression that starts after childbirth. It is common and can come with additional symptoms, as well as those that are typical in MDD. For example, doubts about your ability to care for the baby. We offer specialized prenatal and postpartum care, including help for new parents navigating postpartum depression and related challenges.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

Persistent depressive disorder (PDD) can look different from MDD in that symptoms are low-level and must persist for at least two years. While more mild symptoms of depression generally characterize this type of depression, their duration and continuation can have a serious effect on your life. It can start to feel like just who you are, but it’s not – PDD is a treatable disorder. For example, negative thoughts, feeling emotionally numb or flat, and feeling down can become deeply ingrained patterns that start to feel like your “norm,” even if your quality of life is affected. It is possible to break these patterns. That’s part of why treatment matters.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is challenging to live with, and it is often misdiagnosed at first. It’s characterized by severe depression symptoms that last for about 1-2 weeks before your menstrual period and resolve within about 1-3 days once it starts. People with PMDD often describe feeling like a different person during their luteal phase. Irritability or anger, increased anxiety, difficulty sleeping, physical symptoms, and suicidal thoughts are very common challenges in people with the disorder. PMDD is more than “just PMS.” Like other depressive disorders, PMDD is treatable. It’s not something you have to face alone.
