Caregiver Therapy

Summary: WCT Behavioral Health offers in-person and online caregiver therapy throughout Connecticut.

Caregivers are often very used to taking care of others, but they don’t always extend the same care to themselves. This is not your fault. The toll caregiving has on a person is real. You don’t need to feel guilty for struggling. It’s a natural human response to being under too much pressure. That’s where caregiver therapy comes in. You deserve a support system, too. The mental health professionals at WCT Behavioral Health are here to help take some of the strain off your shoulders and protect your mental and physical well-being from the effects of untreated chronic stress and other issues caregivers so often face. We are proud to provide caregiver support in Connecticut for formal and informal caregivers from all walks of life.

What is Caregiver Therapy?

Caregiver therapy helps people cope with the way caregiving affects their mental health. In caregiver therapy, we often help people build coping and stress management skills, process emotions, problem-solve, and set boundaries or communicate more effectively. However, treatment goals always vary based on personal needs. Every caregiver has a unique situation. It is not uncommon for caregivers to face issues such as:

  • Lack of choice. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), about 56 percent of caregivers say they had no real choice in taking on the role.

  • Social isolation. Many caregivers feel socially isolated. While this can affect any caregiver, this is especially true for those who did not choose to become one.

  • Burnout. Caregivers often experience high levels of burnout. This can be especially true for those with other responsibilities (e.g., those balancing work with unpaid caregiving).

  • Neglected self-care. About a quarter of caregivers say that it is hard for them to take care of themselves.

  • Exhaustion and fatigue. Many caregivers report exhaustion, sleep disturbance, and daytime fatigue.

  • Role adjustments. Caregivers often find themselves struggling with changes in interpersonal dynamics, such as becoming a caregiver for an aging parent.

  • Anxiety. Caregiver anxiety often involves worry, panic, or fear associated with the physical, emotional, or financial demands of caregiving.

Other common concerns include difficult emotions, interpersonal conflict (this could be with the person you’re caring for or others, such as another loved one who is not taking on caregiving responsibilities) or resentment, and struggles with identity or sense of self. Even those who are glad to be caregivers and would have it no other way experience challenges. It’s okay to feel what you’re feeling. Therapy is a confidential place to talk about it.

Why is Caregiver Therapy Important?

Caregiver therapy is important because the impacts of caregiving can take a profound toll on your mental and physical health, especially if they are left unaddressed. Compared to the general population, caregivers face an increased risk of concerns such as:

  • Chronic stress
  • Lifetime diagnosed depression
  • Frequent mental distress
  • Frequent physical distress
  • Any or multiple physical health conditions

Some factors complicate things further. Also according to NAMI, for example, caregivers who are LGBTQIA+ or women report feeling more alone than other caregivers. Similarly, many caregivers have a disability of their own. You are your own person, and your needs matter. Mental health support makes it more possible to balance taking care of yourself with taking care of others. Effective treatment can help you avoid the consequences of untreated chronic stress and other concerns affecting caregivers.
